Let’s Look Around!: English Language Development Lessons (Theme 3)

Let's Look Around! is the theme of an English language development unit comprised of lessons highlighting verb endings, naming and action parts of sentences, consonant clusters, and contractions; all equipped with grand discussions, writing, drawing, and learning games. Topics include weather, the four seasons, things that grow, foods we eat, kitchen wares, scary things, our five senses, and colors.

Instructional Ideas

  • Have a weather fashion show; invite scholars to bring in pieces of clothing to match a particular season 
  • Direct learning to plan then write an invitation to their parents or guardians to an in-class pot luck that offers the food they discussed and drew 
  • Play the game, Lights, Camera, Action!, as a break when pupils are in need of a pause in instruction

  • The unit was designed as part of the Houghton Mifflin English language arts curriculum; it can be used on its own or with another curriculum of similar topic 
  • Multiple resources referenced throughout the unit are not attached; but with modifications, the remaining ESL lessons can be implemented
