Let's Make an Addition Polymer

Young scholars demonstrate how to produce an addition polymer using a free radical initiator. Methyl acrylate is used in an aqueous emulsion to polymerize in the presence of a free-radical catalyst. Students observe that the polymer is coagulated in a concentrated solution of sodium chloride to yield a white product.
