Polypropylene cloth is one of the best materials for cleaning oil from water, but the class will need to find that fact out on their own. The experiment begins with a discussion on the dire impact oil spills have on the natural environment. Then, children will use a variety of materials to test which one is the best at removing oil from a bowl of water. Each group must choose and test three of the materials to determine which is the best. They reconvene to discuss the results and how engineers have created polypropylene cloth based on the nature of oil and chemical principles.
