By adding the tens and ones place separately, beginners to addition can easily complete 10 double-digit addition problems. This is an excellent instructional activity, as it visually sets learners up on the pathway to this strategy. They simply follow the lines to add up the tens place, and do the same with the ones. After adding these two final numbers, they get their total. The guidance is scaffolded so that by the time they are finished learners should be adding without any graphic organization!
