Get your middle schoolers engaged in the civil rights movement using primary source documents! Although this lesson doesn't give you much detail, it offers a nice outline. Start by giving pupils a writing prompt to encourage personal connection (included). Then, review essential vocabulary before reading I Look at the World by Langston Hughes and I Was Not Alone by Rosa Parks (not included). Learners practice taking notes using the double-entry diary format (easily found online), sharing ideas. They finally compare the two texts. There are some excellent extension and adaptation ideas here.
