Teresa Paloma Acosta’s poem, “My Mother Pieced Quilts,” inspires class members to create their own quilt block. The blocks are then used as the basis of a writing lesson. Kids record concrete details from their reading on the block and then use the words to create a poem or descriptive paragraph which they attach to the back of their block. Although the directions for the lesson are rather disjointed, the concept is sound and could be easily adapted to your classroom. Images of quilt block designs are readily available on the Internet.
