What happens to a whole number when you multiply it by another whole number? What happens if you multiply the whole number by a fraction, or a mixed number? The essential questions in this activity ask learners to compare factor sizes and use array area models to better understand multiplication of whole numbers by whole numbers, fractions, and mixed numbers. Teachers begin with a computation discussion with the expressions 16 x 1, 16 x 1/2, and 16 x 1 1/2, to bring out strategies. Teacher modeling with the array area model would be helpful for those who are not proficient with this tool. Note: This activity is not designed to introduce array area models and should be used with classes who are very familiar with them.
