Search the Perimeter and Secure the Area

This Search the Perimeter and Secure the Area lesson plan also includes:

Begin this study on the relationship between area and perimeter with the hook activity featured at the bottom of the "What Shape is Your Land?" link, which offers a fun optical trick to engage high schoolers. Learners should have a basic understanding of  area and perimeter before beginning this group project, which involves an interactive math tool (linked). After discussing the relationship between these two concepts, groups use a worksheet guide to operate the math tool, adjusting areas and observing how it affects the perimeter. Which shape maximizes area within a set perimeter? They take screenshots and create a slide show presentation describing their conclusions. There is a PowerPoint template you could distribute or display to guide groups.
