Playing What's My Number? would be a great warm-up game to introduce this activity. The resource begins with the cooperative group members drawing and counting to figure out the pattern in the number of restaurant goers seated at tables of increasing lengths. A general rule is then written that describes the pattern of numbers. A table of values and the corresponding graph join the scenario and slope is connected to the problem. Finally, the problem solvers are encouraged to find alternative table arrangements to seat the maximum number of guests.
