Similarity and the Golden Section

Using their knowledge of similarity, ratios, proportions, and the quadratic formula, young mathematicians will derive the golden section also referred to as the golden ratio. This lesson uses the Zome system, and pupils working in small groups or pairs to arrive at Phi. This is a rather advanced concept and may require a large degree of teacher direction. Note: In order to arrive at the golden ratio the use of the quadratic formula should read x = (1 + ?5 )/2.
