Slave Songs

This Slave Songs lesson plan also includes:

“Nobody knows de trouble I’ve had/Nobody knows but Jesus/Nobody know de trouble I’ve had/Glory hallelu!” What do slave songs reveal about the role of religion in the lives of slaves? Class members read “An Introduction to the Church in the Southern Black Community” and then select a hymn from William Francis Allen’s Slave Songs of the US to study.  Individuals highlight key themes in the song and then write a brief response to the hymn.
