Solving and Graphing Absolute Value Inequalities

Turning absolute value inequalities into compound inequalities and graphing them is an algorithmic skill that many young algebrists memorize instead of working to understand. This presentation really emphasizes the how's and why's of this process, particularly in the differences in the directions of shading. Multiple examples of both less than and greater than types are worked step by step, along with multi-step problems. The lesson doesn't shy away from sticking points, like negative numbers, making this a surprisingly dense and very informative lesson.

Instructional Ideas
  • Providing a link to the presentation on a class website allows for pre-class viewing or homework help
  • Leave with a substitute along with a corresponding problem set from your curriculum for a turnkey lesson plan
  • Draw a number line on the floor or in a hallway, and have learners pair off and act as solution points on the line for problems
Classroom Considerations
  • Viewing the presentation video requires Internet access
  • Colored dots and lines might cause difficulty for pupils that are colorblind or otherwise visually impaired
  • Consider pausing the video periodically for learners to ask questions and work through problems as seatwork
  • This resource is only available on an unencrypted HTTP website. It should be fine for general use, but don’t use it to share any personally identifiable information
Pros
  • Clear and easily understood voicing of lesson
  • Care taken to explain every step, particularly when dealing with negative numbers
  • Review of math terminology and meaning at the start of the presentation
  • Multiple examples of many types worked completely, from problem statement through graphing
  • Emphasis on reasonableness of answers and checking for validation
Cons
  • No printable note slides provided
  • No corresponding homework problem set made available
