Squiggles

Young writers use their own creative vision and talent to turn a squiggle into a masterpiece. After listening to the book Squiggles, by Carole Lexa Schafer, class members create a squiggle, add color and details, and draft their story in response to what they see in the picture. Consider repeating this instructional activity throughout the year and collecting the stories into a book. The book can be used as one type of authentic assessment to note growth in learners' emergent writing.

Lesson Planet has been fantastic!! I have been able to look at many different lessons based on my chosen theme and then just take the pieces I like and make it my own. It makes life so much easier and I have gleaned some great ideas. Thank you!!
