Lyndon Johnson provides an excellent primary source in a text analysis resource. The class warms up by responding to a quote, and then reads a 1965 speech by Johnson called "Peace Without Conquest", which discusses aggression patterns in Asia. Learners mark the text and form groups to compare notes. Small groups create SOAPstone charts (speaker, occasion, audience, purpose, subject, tone) on poster paper. Finally, they display charts and participate in a gallery walk.
- An extension has learners write how the excerpt would be different for a different audience
