One way to demonstrate understanding of a text is to write a summary. Provide support for your learners as they compose summary by using one or more of these graphic organizers and handouts. There are nine different worksheets here that students can use as they summarize stories or other types of texts.

Instructional Ideas

  • Provide several options for your learners and allow them to choose the organizers that work best for them
  • Hand out the first page separately as a reference page that pupils can keep in their binders or notebooks
  • After filling out the graphic organizers, require your students to take the next step and revise their notes to write a second draft
Classroom Considerations

  • While the informational page only talks about summarizing stories, and several of the organizers are specific to fiction, you could definitely adapt the remaining pages for working with informational texts
  • Some of the charts could provide a bit more space for pupils to write in; bullets and lists may be necessary for the first draft
  • This resource is only available on an unencrypted HTTP website. It should be fine for general use, but don’t use it to share any personally identifiable information
