Tangrams and Fractions: Hands-On Practice
Invented by the ancient Chinese, tangrams are composed of a square broken into seven geometric pieces. When rearranged, these pieces can form a great variety of shapes and pictures. For this hands-on exercise, learners determine the size of each piece as a fraction of the whole original square. They also redefine the smaller pieces as single units and compare the other shapes in relation. Use this as a springboard to adding fractions with unlike denominators.
