Students explore the background of the boat people from Saigon. After a class discussion, they brainstorm what it means to be separated. From a created list of important items, students are asked to eliminate items until only two are left. They simulate making decisions to become a refugee, leaving behind family or to stay in Vietnam. As a concluding activity, students write about their feelings.
