More than just religiously tolerant, Muslims who took over the Byzantine and Persian Empires were culturally tolerant as well. They preserved much of the literature, language, philosophy, geography, and mathematics, even improving upon some. Arab medicine was more advanced than European and Arab architecture influenced the west. The use of icons in the Eastern Orthodox Church became a dividing factor in Constantinople, contributing to a break in Christendom.
