By looking at famous photographs of people in the workplace in early 20th century New York City, eighth graders are introduced to the appalling conditions that people, including children, used to be forced to work in. Each group of pupils is given a photograph to look at and a worksheet (embedded in the plan) to fill out based on their reactions to the photo. When each group is done, they share what they wrote about the photograph with the class. A simple, yet effective social studies lesson.
