A lighthearted introduction to themes, this resource uses adolescent-relevant jokes to help your secondary readers tease out themes implied in reversal of expectations. Perhaps ask them to think of jokes (school appropriate, if you're at school!), jot them down, share with a group and have the groups construct themes for each joke they hear. Great practice and a nice infusion of plain old fun into literacy development. The day after you do this instructional activity, practice again with short, more serious readings.
