U.S. History: Measuring the Growth of Slavery

Learners examine the slavery issue through the seven censuses beginning with 1790 through 1860. Using actual census data, they develop graphs depicting the growth of slave and free black populations. On maps, students show the distribution of slaves and free blacks by states then in the Union. To extend this lesson, they write short essays on one aspect of the growth of slavery.
