Vote for Grace!

Boost reading comprehension skills with a lesson designed around the story, Grace for President by Kelly DiPucchio. A KWL chart introduces the story's topic—running for president—followed by a read-aloud. The class analyzes the main character, examining details from the story and filling in a graphic organizer. Partners take a close look at a character of their choice and discuss their findings with another pair. A look back on the KWL closes the lesson with a reflection.

Instructional Ideas

  • If applicable, plan the lesson near or during a presidential election, allow class members to take a peek into a real-life election alongside the fantasy of the story
  • Gather a collection of stories about children and government, allow them to browse the books when they finish tasks early
  • Direct pupils to attach their character analysis worksheet to their interactive reading notebook, encourage them to look back at them for help when analyzing other characters
Classroom Considerations
