One of the coolest tools scientists use to identify plants, insects, and animals is a field guide. Learners engaged in a unit on butterfly life cycles and adaptations use a field guide as a reference while they work together to identify different types of butterflies. Each pair receives a field guide and a set of images, they take turns using the guide to name each butterfly based on its physical characteristics. The class reconvenes and plays a butterfly matching game, with small breaks to discuss how they know the name of each butterfly.
