Social & Emotional Learning in
Middle School:
Self-Awareness
The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) lists self-awareness as one of the five core competencies of social and emotional learning. The following skills make up the concept of self-awareness:
- Identifying emotions
- accurate self-perception
- Recognizing strengths
- Self-confidence
- Self-efficacy
Middle school is full of change and requires an increase of responsibility—self-awareness eases the transition through self-reflection, emotional development, and establishing healthy habits. Pupils get to know one's self, and in turn, produce a productive and emotionally intelligent individual.
