Journalism Lesson Plans

Students write series of journal entries, from the perspective of an immigrant traveling to America via Ellis Island.

In this lesson students view the film "War Feels Like War" about journalist's experiences in the Iraqi War and discuss the role of journalism in war. They evaluate different media sources for war reporting and determine the questions they want to see addressed.

This lesson has students create nature journals. In this introduction to the nature journal lesson, students discover the uses of nature journals and begin their own. This lesson has students are challenged to use vivid, concise terms in their descriptive language. Activities include describing different birds and following the behavior of a species from a webcam.

This lesson has students identify, record, and process lessons completed through various service-learning activities. They create two-sided copies of the journal cover on colored paper and decorate so that it shows through both sides. This lesson has students then collect all of their necessary materials and construct their journals.

6th graders complete pre reading, writing, during reading, and interdisciplinary activities for the book Journal of Patrick Seamus Flaherty. In this reading lesson plan, 6th graders complete journal entries, go over vocabulary, answer short answer questions, have discussions, and more.  

Students read and analyze the fictional novel Leslie's Journal. Throughout this extended lesson, students are encouraged to respond to thematic concerns and evaluate the plausibility of the text and characters. Many self-reflective activities are suggested to allow for deeper analysis.

In this lesson students understand the writing style in a newspaper. In this journalism lesson, students recognize that a newspaper has a catchy headline and objective writing. In this lesson students interview someone in an area of interest and write a news article.
