Combine numbers and pre-reading by counting the words in a sentence. Kindergartners begin by counting objects in the room, putting a counter down for each number. Do this a few times to get them confident with the skill before applying it to reading. Youngsters listen to sentences and place counters down for each word. Engage them by making the sentences about the class, and slowly use more multi-syllable words. Read the common struggles to be prepared for ways you can assist with problems.
