Dilations on the Coordinate Plane

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

Dilations from the origin have a multiplicative effect on the coordinates of a point. Pupils use the method of finding the image of a point on a ray after a dilation to find a short cut. Classmates determine the short cut of being able to multiply the coordinates by the scale factor to find the new location, given the origin as the center of dilation.

Instructional Ideas
  • Verify the process by using the initial method of finding dilations with the ray from the center through the point
Classroom Considerations
  • Scholars should be familiar with the concept of dilating a point
  • Method described in the resource only works if the center of dilation is the origin
  • The sixth in a 16-lesson unit.
Pros
  • Answer key shows the calculations required to arrive at the solution
  • Resource denotes where learners use different mathematical practices
Cons
  • None
