Here is a good video that describes the main types of "flow" associated with rivers; laminer, turbulent, and shooting flow. They are all aptly described and accompanied by excellent video footage shot in Yellowstone National Park. A river's velocity is determined by the slope of the stream bed, the amount of water flowing, and the condition of the riverbanks.
