This Skate Ramp performance also includes:

Going up and down makes a more exciting ride. Pupils recall what they know about continuity and limits of functions. Working in groups, classmates design a skateboard ramp that meets a given set of criteria, using at least three different function types. They create a cross-sectional view of their plans and write the equations that define the piece-wise function modeling their ramp. Afterwards, each group presents their design to the rest of the class.

Instructional Ideas
  • Overlay a picture of a skateboard ramp with a grid and have individuals create equations for the ramp
  • Require teams to create the equations before graphing either by hand or with technology
Classroom Considerations
  • The class should be comfortable working with piece-wise functions that use a variety of function types
Pros
  • Contains two pre-task activities to review knowledge of functions
  • Includes a benchmark example of the completed task
Cons
  • None
