Trigonometry and Complex Numbers

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

Complex numbers were first represented on the complex plane, now they are being represented using sine and cosine. Introduce the class to the polar form of a complex number with the 13th part of a 32-part series that defines the argument of a complex number in terms of a rotation, and connects the definition to the sine and cosine functions learned in previous courses. Then pupils convert between polar and rectangular forms of complex numbers.

  • Conduct a brief review of trigonometric functions prior to starting the lesson
  • Use the trigonometry review problems to identify class members that will need additional support during the lesson
Classroom Considerations
  • Individuals should be familiar with special right triangles and finding any side given one other side
Pros
  • The teacher notes provide additional suggestions to help the class be successful with the concepts
  • Each section has its own suggested timing
