Partitioning Circles and Rectangles- Independent Practice

Start simple by using a shape-partitioning instructional activity. Scholars begin by segmenting basic shapes in halves and quarters. On the second page, they move on to more complex shapes, such as a heart and a cross, also partitioning them in half and in quarters. If you have time, this would be great to do with actual shape cut-outs, allowing pupils to fold them into these segments. There are five shapes on each of these two pages.

Bridging the Gap

Finding the Area of Polygons
Third graders are exposed to finding the area of polygons by decomposing figures and recomposing them into rectangles. This strategy allows children to expand on their prior knowledge of constructing shapes by rearranging parts into squares. Ideal for using as a guided practice in order to establish connections between composing shapes and finding their areas.
Constructing and deconstructing shapes is a good way to build foundational geometry skills. The class examines and explores the seven geometric shapes that make up a tangram. They create new shapes and form a square using the seven shapes.
Here is a great way to help your students discover ways to combine shapes to fill the area of a given shape using pattern blocks. They discover relationships between different shapes. Using the Internet, learners create puzzles for a partner and play an on-line game.

Young learners explore and identify solid figures found in the classroom and in magazines. They search for shapes in the classroom, complete a worksheet, cut out and sort magazine pictures, and explore various websites.

Compare two- and three-dimensional shapes and construct three dimensional models from two-dimensional shapes. Diagram the shapes and reflect about the process in writing.
