Inquiry in Action: Fifth Grade Chapter 1 - Matter is Made of Tiny Particles

Lesson Planet Curated

Four lesson plans investigate all phases of matter and provide pupils with hands-on experiences that demonstrate that all matter is made of tiny particles. First, scholars explore solutes and solvents. Using candies and water, they observe the properties of parts of the solution as the candies dissolve. Young scientists modify the setup and note variations in the solution. Next, learners dissolve salt in water and then evaporate the water while observing the solute. Finally, class members build a model of the water cycle using everyday materials. They observe the process of evaporation and condensation and relate their observations to the larger scale water cycle.
