Second graders use symmetry to create their own small quilt squares. They attach all of the squares to create a large class quilt.

Students listen to the book, Sam Johnson and the Blue Ribbon Quilt and discuss the art of quilting. They examine various symmetrical sewing designs, and identify reflection pieces, slides, and flips.

Students listen to The Important Thing About Quilt Design and rewrite an original version using geometric terms.

Second graders, in groups, write quilt reports.

Students create Chinese jacket designs using magic markers and paper jackets as well as knowledge of Chinese and American textile designs and techniques in this upper-elementary lesson.
