Annotating Poetry

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

Use text marking and highlighting to explore the structure of a poem. After listening to Allan Ahlberg read "Please Mrs. Butler," learners locate stanzas and patterns on their copy of the poem using the text marking technique. Class members then examine the sequence of events in the stanzas and highlight the changing emotions of the speakers. Pupils refer to their annotated poems to justify their responses to interpretative questions.
