Applying the Laws of Sines and Cosines

Breaking the law in math doesn't get you jail time, but it does get you a wrong answer! After developing the Law of Sines and Cosines in lesson 33 of 36, the resource asks learners to apply the laws to different situations. Pupils must decipher the appropriate problems to apply each law or the Pythagorean Theorem.

Instructional Ideas

  • Record the opening exercise as notes and include the work needed to find the missing measures
  • Form collaborative groups and have groups complete the opening exercise independently; check that they have chosen the correct methods and then have them find the missing sides
Classroom Considerations

  • Although the lesson is designed for one class period, allowing time for exploration may extend that time frame
