Area of Composite Polygon

Eighth graders are shown a blueprint of a house and must determine the amount of carpet needed. In groups, they calculate the area of rectangles and triangles and apply them to the shapes in the blueprint. To end the lesson, they practice calculating the area of different composite polygons and determine how much carpet is needed.

I just transferred mid-year to an art teacher position; it has been more than 15 years since I taught art. I needed some quick ideas to get started. Thank you Lesson Planet!
