Here’s a hugely important video that is difficult to understand and impossible to show in most classrooms. “China is complicated,” says Michael Anti, a Chinese blogger. Anti takes viewers behind the Chinese Internet firewall, to reveal two Internets: the global one we are familiar with, and the Chinese version of the Internet. Anti calls the Chinese Internet the Chinanet, and it here that the fight between government censorship and individual freedom rages. A fascinating look at the workings of a very complex culture.

Pros

  • A fascinating look behind China's Internet firewall
  • Opportunity to flip the video: create your own multiple choice and/or open answer questions to check for understanding, add additional resources, or create a discussion question for an online open forum (requires free online registration)

Cons

  • Preview, preview, preview
  • Because of some of the language the narrator uses, preview the video before presenting to any class
  • The video, created in June, 2012, is a bit dated, but the basic information is still of value
  • For viewers who find the narrator's heavily accented English hard to understand, the captions provided by the YouTube version are equally difficult to comprehend
