Building blocks have more uses than simply entertaining children. Young mathematicians calculate the volume of a given cube, and then calculate the volume and surface area of a prism formed from multiple cubes.

  • Use a set of building blocks to build the prism in the task so the class can see what it looks like
Classroom Considerations

  • In addition to volume, learners need to be able to calculate surface area
  • Note that the task does not cover the fractional edge lengths portion of the Common Core standard

  • Includes commentary on sample student responses
  • Teacher resource has some optional ideas for action research
