Cartoons for the Classroom: Safety vs. Energy

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

Political cartoons are a poignant way to examine energy sources. This analysis handout has scholars examining a cartoon by Joe Heller (a link to his gallery is included for possible extensions). Background information reminds pupils of the recent Fukushima disaster, the West Virginia mine explosion, and the BP oil spill. Three talking points are included to guide deeper thinking. Learners consider the way Heller represents each energy method, and determine the point he makes.
