Shake up the writing process with a peer critique. The second of four lessons in the Grade 8 ELA Module 2B, Unit 3 series first has young writers compare their interpretations of a scene from William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream to the original. Once finished, they engage in a peer critique focused on improving ideas and transitions.

Instructional Ideas

  • During the modeling, extend the learning by asking for other transitions to use

Classroom Considerations

  • Ahead of time, create an anchor chart of the Peer Critique Guidelines that is large enough for everyone to see
  • Furnish the group discussion questions in writing, either through projection or on a slip of paper for each group
  • The Peer Critique tracking document assumes every learner understands that stars are what they did well and steps are how to improve the narrative

Pros

  • Lesson resources contain mentor texts for modeling the critique process
  • Includes an annotated version of the transition model answer
