Chemical Arithmetics

This Chemical Arithmetics handout & reference also includes:

Substances with the same empirical and molecular formula must be differentiated by their structural formula. Part two in a series of 36 has pupils using chemical formulas to calculate how much of a compound is present in a given quantity. They calculate empirical formulas of given compounds and begin to apply this knowledge to chemical formulas through stoichiometry.

Instructional Ideas
  • Break the activity into parts and the classes into groups; have each group work on same section for a given amount of time and then discuss
  • Allow those who complete work correctly peer tutor other groups to assist them
Classroom Considerations
  • Level of knowledge to complete this activity best fits high schoolers with some chemistry background
  • The activity ends with a terminal exercise of 15 calculations to show what students learned
  • Lesson provides keys for all in-text questions
