Choose the symbol; mathematicians can get confused between division and multiplication, so drill these skills with them. They examine 54 number sentences without a symbol, writing either the multiplication or division operation into the otherwise-completed equation. This is a great opportunity to ask them to notice patterns. Do they see that the division problems always have a smaller quotient than the dividend, whereas the multiplication products are always larger?
