Compute fuel economy and gas mileage. Why? So you can teach rates and ratios, of course! Middle schoolers calculate the rate of miles per gallon for various vehicles. They research each vehicle, its mileage per gallon, and cost per gallon. Next, they compare gas expenditures between vehicles. These findings are presented to the class and act as an impetus to engage in small group discussions. This is a great way to build financial literacy and strong practical math skills.
