Hot topics are often engaging and can get heated. High School students engage in an academic discussion were they must learn to engage with a person holding a different view than their own. They practice discussing different opinions with grace and intelligence, not violence or angry words. The topic for discussion suggested is gay rights, but any hot topic would be suitable for the purpose of this lesson.
