Instructional Ideas
  • Ask writers to provide illustrations for their couplets and post the poems around the room
  • Collect all the couplets into a class book and keep these books from year to year
  • Have each poet collect all 10 poems into a personal poetry notebook
Classroom Considerations
  • Although the 10 exercises can be used in any order, the forms become increasingly challenging for reluctant writers
  • Consider revising the worksheet and asking kids to first brainstorm subjects, then to list words associated with the subject, and finally to list words that rhyme
Pros
  • Models, specific directions, and a worksheet are included in the resource
Cons
  • Additional scaffolding may be needed for reluctant writers
  • No list of possible subjects is included
