Here is an activity that presents a real-world problem about the relationship between crude oil production and the gas mileage of modern automobiles. After learners write functions to describe the relationships, they are asked to find the composition of their functions and explain what the result means in the context of the problem. The activity may not take as much time as this review indicates, depending on how much introductory discussion and instruction is required.
