The Grand Canal, the longest and most ambitious canal project ever enacted at that time, integrated northern and southern China. An engine of cultural development, this engineering feat commissioned by emperor Yang Di, proved to be his downfall. The opulence of his court as they sailed along the completed waterway enraged the people and led to a revolution that ended the Sui Dynasty.
