What would it take to live on the lunar surface? Small groups build model rockets in order to simulate launching a habitat into space and rebuilding it. Divide the class into groups to design and build a model of a lunar habitat. The groups continue with the second lesson in developing a plan to provide energy for their habitats. Design teams conclude the activity with a presentation of their models and design briefs to the class.

Concepts

moon exploration, the moon, design, engineering design, space exploration, technology resources

Instructional Ideas

  • Provide teams with different lunar locations in which to design the habitats
  • Have teams research the lunar cycle and surface so they understand the conditions they must overcome

Classroom Considerations

  • Requires space to store the models of the lunar structures
  • Need access to CAD software for design creation

Pros

  • The unit overview provides a generic description of the lesson plan model
  • Unit plan includes lists of suggested resources and necessary print resources

Cons

  • None
