Estimating Probabilities by Collecting Data

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

Take a spin to determine experimental probability. Small groups spin a spinner and keep track of the sums of the spins and calculate the resulting probabilities. Pupils use simulated frequencies to practice finding other probabilities to finish the second lesson in a series of 25.

Instructional Ideas
  • Before calculating the actual probability, have individuals determine the likelihood of the event occurring
Classroom Considerations
  • Make copies of four-segmented spinners for the class
  • Learners need to know how to convert fractions to percents
Pros
  • Includes sample data to demonstrate how to determine the solutions
  • Highlights the section of the lesson where the mathematical practice is used
Cons
  • None
