Here is a nice way to allow your pupils to recognize important people in their lives. After a class discussion that focuses on the many unrecognized everyday heroes, kids make a list of their everyday heroes. Learners create an award for these people, and present it to them at their first convenience. This idea can also be used to recognize each member of the class on a weekly basis. The lesson comes from the Arthur episode "Buster Baxter, Cat Saver."
